Social Media in the Classroom

I believe it is so very important to incorporate technology into our classrooms. You've heard me say it before and you'll hear me say it again and again. This is where our students are at. They are constantly surrounded by technology of some sort, whether it is their parent's smart phones, game devices, tablets, etc. it is part of their life. So why are we as educators going to remove that from the classroom? Instead we need to incorporate it into the classroom in a way that has value and meaning for both yourself and your students. If you are wondering ask yourself if it falls into one of the 4 C's: communication, collaborate, curate, and create. Are you using it to communicate with students or parents? Are you using it collaborate with other students or classes? Are you using it to curate your tech for students accessibility? And are you using it to help students create authentic work? But at the end of the day be smart; if it is not working for you and your students it's not worth your time.

Check out this video by Kathy Cassidy talking about the importance of integrating social media into the classroom!

Resources to use in the classroom:
These are a couple of resources/apps I or colleges have used in the class. Have you used any of these or have your own favorites?

Attention! It is still important to have boundaries  in place between your personal and professional lives. Personally I have my personal accounts locked up and personally approve people who follow me, but my professional accounts are open for anyone, students, parents, colleges etc. Check out my classroom Instagram and Twitter to see what my classes are up to!

Thank you Kristen Thompson for zooming into our class and sharing her ideas about social media in the classroom!

Until next time,

  1. Great Post Delicia

I have a request, Id love for you to show me how to put a youtube video in my blog, I have no idea how to ! I know there is a share button on most videos, but for some reason when I go to share it it doesn't work in bloggers! I as well mentioned the 4 C's and how with technology we can base our lessons around them ! When Kristen mentioned go with the flow and when something doesn't work out try something else, or have a back up plan to know where to go to try something else. Technology is funny and does not always work the we we intended it to work. I think always reminding and implementing the safety around using Tech is supper important !

  2. Great post! I couldn’t agree more with you saying, if it’s not working for you or your students it’s not worth your time. Tech must be used responsibly in the classroom, but just because.
